Shopify native returns vs Return Wise

Do you need a returns app, or are Shopify's native returns enough?

Shopify's native returns — the built-in self-serve returns, return rules, exchanges, and store credit — ship with every store, and for some stores that's genuinely all you need. This page lays out what's native, from Shopify's own Help Center, and where a returns app starts to earn its place. Return Wise is free while we're in our founding window — $0 a month, every feature, no cap on returns — so what follows is a comparison of capability, not of budget.

What's native, and where an app adds to it

Return Wise runs on the same platform primitives — Shopify's native store credit, its orders and refunds — so this isn't “Shopify vs an app.” It's a question of how much of the returns workflow you want handled for you. Both sides currently cost $0, so nothing below turns on price. Side by side:

Comparison as of August 2026, from the Shopify Help Center (Self-serve returns and cancellations; Return and cancellation rules; Creating and processing returns and exchanges; Store credit). Shopify updates these features often — re-check the Help Center before relying on this.

Return Wise Shopify native returns
How shoppers start a return A self-serve return portal on your store that needs only the order number and email — no account, so guest checkouts and stores still on legacy customer accounts are covered — plus returns inside Shopify customer accounts. (Redeeming the store credit afterwards works the same on both paths — see below.) Customers request returns of delivered items from their order status page, customer account, or the Shop app, signed in through the new customer accounts — the Help Center states self-serve returns “don't work with legacy customer accounts,” though a store keeping legacy accounts can link shoppers to the new customer-accounts URL to request returns.
Approving requests Automated return rules — approve, hold for review, or block by return reason, product tag or type, customer tag, order value, item condition, and time since delivery, plus customer-history conditions (prior returns, return rate). Unlimited rules, and an AI assistant that drafts them from your written policy. Each request emails you for review; you approve or decline it in the Shopify admin. Return rules set the return window, return shipping cost, a restocking percentage, and final-sale products or collections — one default rule set, with per-market variants in early access.
Store credit Native Shopify store credit offered to the shopper at request time — with an optional bonus — alongside a refund to the original payment method, so the shopper picks. Store credit is a refund method you pick when processing the return (original payment, store credit, or both), with an optional expiry date. The Help Center describes no bonus tied to a return refund — extra credit is a separate manual issue on the customer profile.
Exchanges Shoppers choose a variant swap at request time, or a “shop the store” exchange for something else in your catalog — no admin step to add the items. “Exchanges can't be requested in self-serve returns” — you add exchange items in the admin when you approve a return.
Return labels Prepaid labels through your own label-provider account, or self-ship instructions; customer-paid labels with the cost deducted from the refund, automatic label offers, and carrier tracking. Create a return label in Shopify only when your primary location and the customer's address are both in the United States; otherwise upload a label for each return, or require no shipping.
Return-abuse protection Return-abuse detection and blocking, risk scores, and photo requirements — included, not an upgrade. Not part of the documented native returns feature set.

One store-credit return, step by step

The table above says what each path includes. This is what each path actually asks of you and your shopper for a single return refunded to store credit — the native steps are adapted from the Help Center's Self-serve returns and cancellations, Creating and processing returns and exchanges, Refunding orders, and Store credit articles (August 2026), with Shopify's button labels in bold. (The refund half is covered click-by-click in how to refund to store credit on Shopify.)

Shopify native returns

Your shopper
  1. Signs in to their customer account (email plus a six-digit emailed code, no password — the new customer-accounts sign-in, also reachable from the Shop app), opens the order, and clicks Return items.
  2. Selects the eligible items, sees the estimated refund and any restocking fee from your return rules, picks a return reason, adds a note, and clicks Request return. They get a confirmation email; the request now waits for you.
You, in the Shopify admin
  1. You're emailed when a request lands (if staff order notifications are on) — or use the Customer request filter in Orders. Open the order and click Review request.
  2. Optionally adjust the restocking or return-shipping fee or add exchange items, then pick a shipping option — Create a return label in Shopify (only when your primary location and the customer's address are both in the US), Upload a return label, or No shipping required — and click Approve. The shopper gets the approval email (and the label, if you provided one).
  3. When the item arrives, open the order again and click Process return: select the items received, optionally Restock at a location, choose to refund Now, set Refund method to Store credit (optionally with an expiry; you need the Refund to store credit permission), and click Process and refund. Their balance updates and the refund email goes out (it's on by default).

The credit equals the refund amount — there's no bonus in this flow. To add one, you'd separately go to Customers, open the profile, and under Store credit click EditCredit, enter the amount and expiry, Review changes, and confirm.

Return Wise

Your shopper
  1. Opens the return portal on your store and enters their order number and email — no account or sign-in code needed — then picks the items and a reason. (Shoppers already signed in to their Shopify customer account can use the Returns action there instead.)
  2. Sees the offer: store credit, with any bonus you've set, next to the original-payment refund, both with exact amounts. Chooses credit, reviews, and submits. They get a confirmation email — and, unless a rule (or your Review before shipping setting) holds the return, the ship-to instructions straight away, with a label offer if you've connected a label provider.
You, in Return Wise
  1. Nothing yet. The return is already in your queue as Waiting for item — there's no approval step. (If a rule or your Review before shipping setting held it, it sits in Pending review and it's one Approve request click.) Holding returns for review is a setting you turn on, not a tier you buy — the full rule engine is there from the first install.
  2. When the item arrives, open the return and click Mark as received & issue store credit, then confirm. Store credit plus the bonus lands on the customer's Shopify balance, the “credit issued” email goes out, restock runs if you've turned it on, and the timeline closes. One action.

Prefer credit before the parcel is back? Set Default Issue Timing to Immediately on credit selection under Settings → Refunds & credit (it's off by default) and eligible returns are credited the moment they're submitted — you just confirm receipt when the item arrives. Guardrails stay on: first-time buyers and credits above your cap still wait for receipt, and a review rule always wins.

Native steps as of August 2026 from the Help Center; Shopify's admin changes, so re-check before relying on this. Return Wise steps describe the shipped product: the store-credit bonus, return labels, automatic label offers, carrier tracking, and the rule engine are all included on the Founding plan, with no feature held back for a higher tier.

What it costs

Shopify's native returns are included in your Shopify plan — there's nothing to install and nothing extra to pay. Right now Return Wise costs the same: $0 a month on the Founding plan, every feature, as many returns as you get, and no per-return fee. Stores that install during the founding window keep that plan for as long as the app stays installed. Paid plans will return for new installs later; founding stores aren't migrated onto them and aren't asked to pay. There's nothing to trial, no credit card, and no contract — the details are on the pricing page and the founding offer page.

Store credit itself is Shopify's on either path — the same balance, redeemed the same way: at checkout when signed in through customer accounts or with Shop Pay (the Help Center notes it isn't available on legacy customer accounts). What Return Wise adds is the moment of choice — the shopper is offered credit (with the bonus, if you set one) against a refund at request time, instead of you picking a refund method after the fact.

How we calculate refunds

Return Wise refunds the price a customer actually paid for an item — the discounted unit price, after any order-level discount is spread across the line. That math is shown on the return portal before the shopper submits, and again in your queue, so nothing about the number is a black box. If you charge a return or restocking fee, it's shown before submit too. When a shopper chooses store credit, an optional bonus is applied on top of that figure — after any fee is deducted — and the tradeoffs are laid out in our store credit vs. refund guide.

When Shopify's native returns are enough

We'd rather you skip the app than install one you don't need — free doesn't make an extra moving part free of effort. Stick with what's built in if:

  • You get a handful of returns a month and reviewing each request by hand in the admin is no burden. Automation only earns its keep once there's a queue.
  • You need order cancellations before fulfillment. Shopify's self-serve cancellations handle those; Return Wise handles returns of fulfilled orders and doesn't do cancellations.
  • You take returns in person. Shopify POS processes in-store returns and exchanges (return rules on POS need POS Pro). Return Wise is for online returns.
  • You're US-based, ship domestically, and want labels at Shopify Shipping rates with no separate carrier account. Return Wise's labels run through your own label-provider account.
  • Every shopper already signs in through customer accounts, and you don't need automated approvals, store-credit incentives, shopper-chosen exchanges, or abuse checks.

If two or more of those stop being true — the queue is growing, you sell to guests, you want credit-with-bonus offered up front, or you're spotting serial returners — that's the point where Return Wise starts earning its place. While the founding window is open, finding out costs $0: install it, run a few returns through it, and uninstall if the native flow was fine after all.

What you get with Return Wise

  • Store credit — native Shopify store credit, no coupon codes, with an optional bonus on top.
  • Refunds to the original payment method — offered next to the credit, with exact amounts, so the shopper chooses.
  • A self-serve return portal on your store, plus returns inside Shopify customer accounts.
  • The full rule engine — unlimited automated return rules, the advanced conditions and actions, and AI policy drafting.
  • Exchanges — same-item variant swaps and “shop the store” exchanges.
  • Return labels — prepaid labels through your own label-provider account (or labels you bought elsewhere, attached), and self-ship instructions; customer-paid labels with the cost deducted from the refund, automated label offers, and carrier tracking.
  • A retention dashboard, return-abuse detection and blocking, staff approvals, AI insights, and photo evaluation.

All of it is on the one plan we offer right now — the Founding plan, $0 a month, no per-return fee, no cap on returns, nothing held back for a higher tier. Nothing here is “coming soon,” either: every line above is shipped. Paid plans will come back for new installs later, and stores that installed under the founding plan keep it.
