This isn't “better than AfterShip at everything.” AfterShip Returns is a mature app with the Built for Shopify badge that sits inside a much larger post-purchase suite. But if you're a small or mid-size store choosing on price and on what you actually get for it, the differences are concrete:

What you'd pay at your volume, side by side

The same published numbers, worked through as a monthly cost at a few return volumes. The Return Wise column is flat because the Founding plan has no monthly fee and no per-return fee, so volume doesn't move it; AfterShip's two priced paid plans are shown separately so you can pick the one that fits your store rather than have us pick it for you:

Return Wise's column needs no caveats: the Founding plan has no monthly fee and no per-return fee, so there's nothing to prorate, meter, or true up at any volume — and no cap that pauses returns once you pass it.

One more line item to check before you compare totals: Return Wise has no per-seat pricing — every staff account on your Shopify store can work returns at no extra cost. AfterShip prices team-member access separately on its organization plans (from $10 per member per month billed annually, or $12 billed monthly, per aftership.com as of August 2026), so confirm what your AfterShip plan includes for the people who'd use it.

How we calculate refunds

Return Wise refunds the price a customer actually paid for an item — the discounted unit price, after any order-level discount is spread across the line. That math is shown on the return portal before the shopper submits, and again in your queue, so nothing about the number is a black box. If you charge a return or restocking fee, it's shown before submit too. When AfterShip is the better choice

We'd rather you pick the right tool than the wrong one. Choose AfterShip Returns if you need:

• One vendor for the whole post-purchase stack. AfterShip sells returns alongside order tracking, shipping, email/SMS, and reviews. If you want those under one roof and one login, that's a real advantage — Return Wise does returns, exchanges, and store credit, and nothing else.
• Labels at pre-negotiated carrier rates, no carrier account needed. AfterShip's paid plans include carriers with pre-negotiated rates. Return Wise generates labels through your own label-provider account (or you attach labels you bought elsewhere).
• Enterprise integrations and a returns API. ERP/WMS integrations, POS returns, a warranty portal, and returns webhooks and an API sit on AfterShip's Premium and Enterprise tiers; SSO and multi-brand (multi-org) management are Enterprise-tier. Its listing also names Shopify Flow and Gorgias connections. Return Wise has no public API, no POS or warranty modules, and no Flow or Gorgias connector — it offers signed outbound webhooks you can wire into those yourself.
• Shopper-funded free returns. If your model is to have shoppers fund “free” returns at checkout, AfterShip's Return Care tier is built for that. Return Wise itself never charges your shoppers anything — any return fee is one you set, and you keep it.

A small DTC store that mainly wants returns handled well, at a price it can actually justify, usually doesn't need those — which is exactly who Return Wise is for.
